$490,000 to support further enhancement of Carinata for biofuel
Saskatoon, SK January 12, 2012 – Agrisoma Biosciences Inc. has been granted $490,000 from the
Saskatchewan Agriculture Development Fund (ADF) to support the continued enhancement of
Carinata energy feedstock for biofuel production. This funding is recognition of both the leading‐
edge research and innovation being conducted by Agrisoma, as well as the opportunity Carinata
offers growers in Southern Saskatchewan as a new crop option.
“With the first commercial quantities of Carinata seed set to go in the ground this year,
Agrisoma is at a key point its quest to deliver a scaleable, economically viable source of biofuel,”
said Steven Fabijanski, President and CEO of Agrisoma. “The ADF support will help to accelerate
our development of Carinata varieties with oil composition and oil chemistry optimized for
biofuel production.”
Specifically, Agrisoma will use the ADF grant to support the application of the company’s
proprietary Engineered Trait Loci (ETL) technology to Carinata. Using ETL technology, Agrisoma
intends to stack multiple new traits into conventional Carinata. These traits are designed to:
further enhance the Carinata oil profile for biofuel; increase the oil content within each Carinata
seed; heighten overall plant yield; and, improve the plant’s ability to thrive in semi‐arid areas
with reduced inputs.
The grant to Agrisoma was announced as part of a record $8.3 million in crop‐related research
the ADF is granting to a range of agricultural organizations and projects. ADF provides funding to
help institutions, companies and industry organizations conduct research, development and
value‐added activities that will benefit Saskatchewan growers and ranchers.
